Class A fire extinguishers are designed to stop the spread of ordinary combustible fires such as paper, wood chips, rubber, fabrics, tapistry and some upholstery fires.

Class A fire extinguishers may be marked with a green triangle symbol and rated for Class A Fires.

Class B fire extinguishers are designed to stop the spread of flammable liquid fires such as gasoline, motor oil, cooking oil, paint, lacquers and tar fires.

Class B fire extinguishers may be marked with a red square symbol and rated for Class B Fires.

Class C fire extinguishers are designed to stop the spread of fires caused by electrical fires from outlets, wires, fuses, batteries, car batteries any type of electrical fire.

Class C fire extinguishers may be marked with a blue circle symbol and rated for Class C Fires.

Class D fire extinguishers are designed to stop the spread of metal and alloy fires such as alkali metals, magnesium, titanium, aluminum, zirconium, lithium, and sodium-potassium alloy fires.

Class D fire extinguishers may be marked with a yellow decagon or a star symbol and rated for Class D Fires.

Class K fire extinguishers are designed to stop the spread of kitchen fires such as cooking oils, grease, trans-fats, and fats found in cooking appliances like a deep-fryer fires.

Class K fire extinguishers may be marked with a black hexagon symbol and rated for Class K Fires.
